Maori Language Awards

Maori Language Award comes Home

Once again Nga Iwi is at the top of the ladder when it comes to promoting, learning and regenerating the Maori language. Over the past year we have been working on many programmes with our students and staff to help them become confident learners and teachers in Te Reo Maori.

We have held many activities including making Te Reo me nga Tikanga a school wide focus for the whole of term 2. Our School topic was called ‘ I love you Aotearoa’. Whanau groups across our school learnt about the things they love about Aotearoa, Te Reo Maori being one.

Throughout the term, the school prepared for our Te Marama o te Reo Maori initiatives. They involved all children in a five-week long art intensive focusing on Te Reo I te Hapori, Maori Language in the community. All whanau contributed to our Hapori Art Displays at the Auckland International Airport, Mangere Town Centre Library and Eye for Art Gallery and store and Westfield Manukau.

A group of students worked on a five-week specialist project to produce a mural that reflects our own school Hapori and promotes Te Reo Maori. The choir made up a song called ‘ Ko wai nga tangata a Hapori’. (Who are the people in your Neighbourhood)

Our staff were involved in weekly Te Reo Maori Lessons. An initiative that came out of Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori 2008. They also visited Te Manukanuka o Hoturoa Marae at the airport to build their content knowledge of Te Ao Maori.

There was a school wide Hui for Te Wiki o te Reo Maori and a Whanau Day. Whanau came into the school to learn along side their children. We had a Homai te Pakipaki show with Te Hamua Nikora and contributed to the Mangere Hapori celebrations.

As you can see Nga Iwi staff, students and whanau worked hard to achieve this ward this year.

Mehemea i whakato i tenei kakano, ara ko te Te Reo Maori i te maara o Mangere , ka tupu ake, ka puawai i te reo Rangatira ma nga tamariki mokopuna i to matou hapori ki nga ra kei te heke mai.
If you plant this seed, that is Maori Language in the Community, in the garden of Mangere, the Maori language will grow and blossom for our grandchildren in our community in the days to come.
